Vivienne Westwood Spring 2006 Gold Label "Drunken" Jacket
This striped brown "Drunken" jacket is from Vivienne Westwood’s Spring 2006 Gold Label collection. Gold Label is Westwood's finest label, where pieces are made to demi-couture or couture standards.
Cut from lustrous striped wool with a sheen to the cloth, the jacket twists and warps traditional Savile Row structure. First introduced in the mid-1990s, the "Drunken" jacket became one of Westwood’s most iconic designs. For Fall 2006, this piece was styled over the runway debut of her now-famous “I AM NOT A TERRORIST, please don’t arrest me” t-shirt. This statement protested changes to terrorism laws in mid-2000s Britain. The combination of deconstructed jacket and slogan t-shirt encapsulates Westwood’s legacy: fashion as both beauty and provocation.
The design features sculptural draping through the centre front, creating a softly twisted effect across the lapel and chest. Cut with a fitted waist and elongated body, the jacket has notched lapels, a three-button closure and buttoned cuffs. There is a double vent at the back. The flap pockets are lined with a pastel stripe cotton, as are the internal seams. There is a welt pocket at the chest. The collar is lined with gold silk.
