Chanel Fall 1995 Dress
This black ruffle-trimmed dress from Chanel’s Fall 1995 collection exemplifies Karl Lagerfeld’s romantic approach to the house’s heritage. Crafted from a textured wool-blend crepe with softly gathered fabric at the bust, the design flatters the body while maintaining an air of refinement. The straps are detailed with pretty, sheer silk ruffles. The back forms a cage-like structure - a detail that blends structure with seduction - finished with a double-C logo button at the back of the neck. The dress also fastens at the back with a hidden tonal zip and logo button. It is lined with silk woven with the brand's logo. The piece captures the modern, wearable glamour that defined Lagerfeld’s mid-1990s Chanel collections.
The Fall 1995 Couture collection laid claim to Chanel's synonymity with the LBD (little black dress). The collection contained dresses with similar structures to this dress, noteably the ruched bust, laid-back body skimming fit and the structure of the straps. This ready-to-wear dress takes its lead from the couture silhouettes but was made in a commercial capacity for stores. The Fall 1994 collection contained dresses with ruffle-trimmed straps - seen on Claudia Schiffer as she walked behind Karl Lagerfeld at the end of the show - and could have influenced this design.
