Balenciaga x Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2015 Coat
This Balenciaga beige dress coat from Pre-Fall 2015 reflects Alexander Wang’s modern, street-influenced interpretation of the house’s sculptural heritage. During his tenure as creative director (2012–2015), Wang sought to fuse Cristóbal Balenciaga’s architectural silhouettes with a contemporary urban sensibility. The soft pink graffiti spray detailing disrupts the refined structure of the coat, introducing a subversive edge that speaks to Wang’s fascination with the contrast between luxury and the street.
Expertly tailored from a stiff, sculpting wool with a hint of silk, the fabric has a sumptuous coffee-beige tone and a substantial, almost armour-like handle. The silhouette is curved and cocooning, recalling Balenciaga’s historic volumes, while a sharply nipped waist and exaggerated hips sculpt the body with dramatic precision. Oversized fabric-covered buttons heighten the cartoonish exaggeration of the form, echoed by the childlike naïveté of the candy-pink spray detailing at the hem and sleeves. The classic formal collar and angular welt pocket ground the piece in traditional tailoring, amplifying the contrast between Wang’s street references and Balenciaga's formal history. It is fully lined in a tonal coffee-hued silk-blend crepe.
