Versace 2000s Top
Versace Jeans Couture was introduced in the late 1980s, shortly after the launch of the Versus line. At the time, Versace operated multiple diffusion labels, a strategy that remained in place until 2018, when the company was acquired by the Michael Kors group. Under new ownership, the decision was made to consolidate the remaining diffusion lines - Versus and Versace Collection - under a revived Versace Jeans Couture banner.
During the 1990s, Versace Jeans Couture functioned as the house’s dedicated denim line, best known for its iconic jeans featuring exposed garment tags and gold Medusa logo patches at the back. Alongside denim, the line offered a more wearable interpretation of Versace’s signature iconography. As the millennium approached, the aesthetic grew increasingly bold, with the exaggerated motifs and maximalism of the emerging Y2K era taking hold. The Versace Jeans Couture Fall 1999 campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, exemplifies this shift perfectly (see picture).
This top dates to the 2000s when the label changed to pale grey and bore the sign of the Medusa. It is a sensuous lightweight knit with a thinner, more transparent knit at the rear. At the back of the neck it is embroidered with the Medusa symbol, which shows clearly against the sheerer rear weave. The neck is high and buttons at the side of the neck with tonal buttons engraved with the brand name. It has a thick stretch-knit waistband. The top is unlined.
