Oscar de la Renta Fall 1992 Dress
This gown walked the runway as part of Oscar de la Renta's Fall 1992 collection. The designer showed the same silhouette in a variety of colourways, and this dress is crafted from thick black velvet and black silk taffeta. The dress also contains the I. Magnin label, indicating that it was stocked by the San Francisco-based high fashion and luxury goods department store. The bust and sleeves are tailored from thick black cotton velvet. The bust is detailed with a band of satin and a flat bow at the centre front. Below the bust, the dress is crafted from satin and panelled like a corset to cinch the waist. It then gives way to a voluminous skirt with a stiff, structured bottom hem, further lined with black tulle and a black satin slip. This creates a sculpted drop-waist silhouette that could be designed in the present day. The dress fastens at the back with a hidden tonal zip. and hook-and-eye.
A stand-out collection in the brand's history, this opulent show featured supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen, Christy Turlington, Tyra Banks and Yasmeen Ghauri. The New York Times noted the bursts of applause from the audience and specifically praised, "The grand ball gowns that are a de la Renta speciality - typically embroidered velvet bodices with billowing satin skirts."
