Christian Lacroix Fall 1993 Dress
This Christian Lacroix dress dates to Fall 1993, when models walked the runway in black silhouettes punctuated by peekaboo ribbonwork cut-outs and elaborately constructed sleeves. Crafted from a weighty ribbed knit, the dress hangs with a fluid, body-skimming drape, the stretch allowing for a flexible, flattering fit. Sheer tulle sleeves introduce a striking contrast to the dense knit body. The exaggerated cuffs reference Lacroix’s theatricality, composed of intricate, swirling ribbonwork that climbs to the elbow and falls sensually over the hand. This ribbonwork embellishment would come to be a signature of the fashion house. Unlined, the dress has no fastenings and slips on.
The New York Times wrote of the collection: "The designer has created his own fantasy world of clothes some women dream about. It is a very special place, quite different from the workaday world."
