Roberto Cavalli Fall 2002 Shirt
Chinese Print Silk Shirt with Quilting
This decadent shirt dates to Roberto Cavalli’s Fall 2002 runway show. Tailored from pure silk, it is printed with a patchwork of patterns that reads like a gallery of Cavalli’s greatest hits: chinoiserie-style fabrics with dragon motifs, florals, butterflies, and tortoiseshell, inspired by traditional East Asian textiles.
Recalling the beautiful quilting details seen on the runway, the collar and lapels are finished with quilted, padded black silk. The turn-up cuffs are also accented with black silk quilting. Cut in a loose silhouette, the shirt can be worn open or sculpted into a wraparound style, fastening with a thin black silk waist belt threaded through fabric loops. The shirt is unlined. It has a flexible, loose cut so is adaptable on size.
As Vogue noted of the collection: “Each show is like the next installment in a so-bad-it's-good soap opera, and this fall we see our heroine in possession of the keys to her first French chateau. Now she's a lady, and her idea of dressing the part means slipping into a scarf-print dress or a trompe l'oeil satin blouse with a few fabulous estate jewels printed on the front.”
